What Is a Sunrise Alarm Clock? How It Works and Why People Use Them

Being jolted awake by a loud alarm isn’t exactly a fun way to start the day. And if you’re waking up before the sun is up, opening your eyes to a completely dark room doesn’t help.

That’s where sunrise alarm clocks come in. Instead of relying on sound alone, they gradually brighten your bedroom before it’s time to get up. It’s a bit like having a sunrise in your room.

After using a few different sunrise alarms, we’ve found there can be a big difference between them. Some are really all about the light. Others add sleep sounds, bedtime routines, apps, Bluetooth speakers and all kinds of extras.

So, what does a sunrise alarm actually do, and is waking up with one really that different?

What Is a Sunrise Alarm Clock?

A sunrise alarm clock, also called a wake-up light, is basically an alarm clock that uses gradually increasing light to help wake you up.

Rather than staying dark until your alarm suddenly goes off, the light comes on before your chosen wake-up time and slowly gets brighter. Some models also change color, starting with warmer red or orange light before moving toward brighter yellow or white.

Most still have a sound alarm too. Depending on the clock, you might wake to birds, music, nature sounds, FM radio or a regular alarm tone. The difference is that by the time you hear it, your room is already getting lighter. And you may even find yourself waking up before the sound starts.

How Does a Sunrise Alarm Clock Work?

You start by setting the time you want to wake up, just as you would with a regular alarm. The difference is what happens before the alarm goes off.

Let’s say you need to be up at 7 am and you’ve chosen a 30-minute sunrise. At around 6:30, the light starts to glow. It gradually gets brighter until it reaches your chosen brightness around 7 am.

That’s basically how they work. But there are some differences.

For example, the Hatch Restore 3 is much more than a wake-up light. Its sunrise alarm is part of a larger bedtime and morning routine, with sleep sounds, wind-down features and app-based customization.

The JALL Wake-Up Light takes a simpler, more affordable approach, while still giving you plenty of control over the length and brightness of your sunrise.

The Philips HF3520 puts more of the emphasis on the wake-up light itself, with a bright, gradual sunrise and fewer extras.

So, while they all do the same basic job, the experience can be quite different. It really comes down to whether you want a simple wake-up light or something that does more.

What Are the Benefits of a Sunrise Alarm Clock?

The main benefit is pretty straightforward: waking up more gently.

Instead of going from sleep and darkness to a sudden alarm, you get a gradual period of light first. For some people, that can make the transition from sleeping to actually getting out of bed feel a little easier.

There is some research behind dawn simulation too. Studies have found that gradually increasing light before waking may reduce morning grogginess and improve alertness for some people. The research is still fairly limited, though, so we wouldn’t treat a sunrise alarm as a guaranteed way to feel more refreshed.

A sunrise alarm isn’t going to fix poor sleep or magically turn you into someone who loves getting up at 6 am.

We think they make the most sense for people who simply want a gentler way to wake up.

Sunrise alarms can also be particularly appealing in fall or winter, or anytime you need to get up before the sun does. If you’re like me, there’s quite a difference between waking up in a pitch-black bedroom and waking up with warm light already filling part of the room.

What Does Waking Up with a Sunrise Alarm Feel Like?

This was one of the things we were most curious about.

It turns out that you don’t necessarily wake up as soon as the light comes on. You may sleep through most of the sunrise and only become aware of it toward the end.

Sometimes you’ll open your eyes before the alarm sound starts. Other mornings, the sound will still be what actually wakes you, but you’re opening your eyes to a lit room rather than complete darkness.

And yes, the quality of the light makes a difference.

Some clocks mostly seem to get brighter. Others do a much better job of creating that slow change in color and brightness that makes the experience feel more like an actual sunrise.

Where you put the clock matters too. If it’s hidden behind a pile of books or sitting across the bedroom, you’re probably not going to get the full effect. Ideally, you want the light somewhere it can actually reach you while you’re sleeping.

Are Sunrise Alarm Clocks Better Than Regular Alarm Clocks?

It depends on what you mean by better. If all you need is something loud enough to make sure you’re out of bed by 7, a regular alarm clock may be perfectly fine.

A sunrise alarm is more about how you wake up.

Instead of waiting until your wake-up time and then demanding your attention, it starts the process earlier with light. You can still have sound at the end, so you don’t have to trust a little glowing lamp to get you to work on time.

There are downsides, of course. Sunrise alarms are usually bigger and more expensive than basic alarm clocks, and some come with more features than you may ever use.

But if you regularly wake up in the dark or hate being startled awake by a conventional alarm, the difference can be worth it.

What Features Should You Look for in a Sunrise Alarm Clock?

Start with the sunrise. It sounds obvious, but it’s easy to get distracted by long lists of sounds, apps, Bluetooth and other extras. The light is the feature you’re buying the clock for.

Look at how long you can make the sunrise, how bright the light gets and whether you can adjust those settings. Some models also move through different light colors, which can make the sunrise feel more natural.

Then think about how much else you actually want your alarm clock to do.

If you just want a good wake-up light, you may be perfectly happy with a simpler model. If you want sleep sounds, bedtime routines and lots of customization, something like the Hatch Restore 3 may make more sense.

A few other things are worth checking:

  • Can you set different alarms for weekdays and weekends?
  • Can you turn the clock display completely off at night?
  • Does it have sounds you would actually want to wake up to?
  • Are the controls easy to use when you’re half asleep?
  • Does it require an app?
  • Is a subscription needed for any of the features you want?

That last one is easy to overlook. Some people like controlling everything from their phone. Others specifically want an alarm clock so they can stop reaching for their phone at bedtime.

Are Sunrise Alarm Clocks Worth It?

For the right person, we think so. If mornings are rough, you regularly wake before daylight, or you simply hate the feeling of being startled awake, a sunrise alarm is worth considering.

You don’t necessarily need a super expensive one, either. We’ve found that spending more tends to get you better light, more customization or additional sleep features. The basic idea of gradually brightening the room is available at much lower prices too.

One thing a sunrise alarm isn’t is a substitute for getting enough sleep. And it shouldn’t be confused with a dedicated light-therapy lamp, which serves a different purpose and typically produces much brighter light.

Think of a sunrise alarm as a different way to wake up, not a solution to every sleep problem.

Choosing the Right Sunrise Alarm Clock

There isn’t one type that makes sense for everyone.

If you want your alarm to double as a complete bedtime and morning routine, you may appreciate the extra features of a more advanced model. If you mostly want a good sunrise and a reliable alarm, there’s no reason to pay for features you won’t use.

We’d pay particular attention to the light itself, the controls and how you’ll actually use the clock every morning. Those things tend to matter more over time than an impressive-looking feature list.

We’ve compared our current favorites in our Best Sunrise Alarm Clocks of 2026 guide, including options for overall experience, value and light quality.
